Fix Your Boxing Basics
3 beginner mistakes and the drill to fix each one
Mistake 1: dropping your hands
- After you punch, your hand drifts down instead of back to your face
- Common cause: overreaching or leaning into the punch
- Fix: bring every punch straight back to your cheekbone
- Drill: shadowbox in a mirror, freeze after each punch and check your guard
Mistake 2: flat feet
- Standing flat-footed slows every punch and every dodge
- Common cause: getting tired and settling flat mid-round
- Fix: stay light on the balls of your feet, knees soft
- Drill: light bounce or shuffle for 30 seconds between combos
Mistake 3: holding your breath
- Holding your breath tires you out fast and weakens your punch
- Common cause: gritting your teeth and forgetting to exhale
- Fix: exhale sharply through your mouth on every punch
- Drill: shadowbox for 2 minutes, one sharp exhale per punch
Good to know
- Learn these 3 basics slowly before adding power. Bad habits at low speed become worse habits at high speed.
