Your Tiny Habit Stack
Turn one small action into a lasting habit, with a 7-day starter stack
Pick one anchor
- An anchor is something you already do daily: coffee, brushing your teeth, arriving home
- Fill in: After I ____ (anchor), I will ____ (tiny habit)
- Example: After I pour my coffee, I will drink one glass of water
- If-then plans like this raised goal success across 94 studies (effect size 0.65, NCI)
- Do it in the same place each time. Repeating in a consistent context builds habit
Make it two minutes
- Walk: to the end of the street and back. Water: one glass. Push-ups: five
- Stretch: one. Protein: an egg or a yogurt. Read: one page
- Rule: if a bad day can argue with it, shrink it further
- You can always do more, but the tiny version still counts as done
Stack four habits
- Morning: after coffee, drink a glass of water
- Midday: after lunch, walk to the corner and back
- Evening: after dinner, do five push-ups. Before bed, one stretch
- Add one new habit every 2 weeks, only when the last one feels automatic
- In one study, time to near-peak automaticity ranged from 18 to 254 days.
The 7-day tracker and the miss rule
- Draw a grid: 4 habits down, 7 days across. Tick each box when you finish
- Never miss twice: missing one day didn't derail habit formation in that study
- Small reward: a song, a stretch, a tick you can see. Celebrate right away
- Week 4 review: keep, shrink or drop each habit. Keep only what you'd miss
Good to know
- Start with just one habit in week 1. A habit you keep beats a plan you abandon.
