The Farmer's Carry
Why grip strength is linked to healthier aging
What it trains
- Grip strength: your hands fight to hold on the whole walk
- Core: your obliques and abs resist tipping sideways
- Posture: tall spine, shoulders back and down, the whole way
- Traps and upper back from holding the weight at your sides
Why grip strength matters
- A large international study linked lower grip strength with higher risk of death
- It also linked lower grip strength with higher cardiovascular disease risk
- It's an association, not proof that training grip alone extends life
- Training it is nearly free: you're already holding things every day
How to do it
- Pick up two heavy kettlebells or dumbbells
- Stand tall, shoulders down and back, core braced
- Walk 30-40 meters in a straight line
- Set the weights down under control, don't drop them
- Repeat for 3 rounds
Good to know
- Grip fading fast? Chalk, thicker grips, or shorter rounds with more sets all help you train it longer.
