Your 12-Hour Window
A gentle overnight eating window, with meal timing and no stress
Pick your window
- Aim for 12 hours between your last bite and your first, like 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
- Choose a kitchen-closing time and set a reminder alarm 30 minutes before it
- Only tighten by 30 minutes if 12 hours has felt easy for 2 weeks
- Early riser: kitchen closes 7 p.m., breakfast 7 a.m. Night owl: 10 p.m. to 10 a.m.
- 12-month trial: an 8-hour window added no weight loss beyond calorie control (Liu 2022)
- Eating the same food later in the day raised hunger in a crossover trial (Vujovic 2022)
What to eat inside it
- Eat regular meals. Skipping lunch and overeating later works against you
- Protein at breakfast, like eggs, yogurt or tofu, helps you feel fuller
- Use the plate method: half veg, a palm of protein, a fist of carbs
- Water, tea and black coffee are fine outside your window. Keep them unsweetened
Handle cravings and social nights
- Brush your teeth right after dinner. It's a clear 'kitchen closed' signal
- Craving at night? Have warm tea or water and wait 10 minutes
- Dinner out? Enjoy it. Shift the window that day or simply resume tomorrow
- After a late night, eat your normal breakfast. Don't skip meals to make up
Who should skip it
- Pregnant or breastfeeding, underweight, or eating-disorder history? Talk to a doctor first
- Diabetes, or medication that needs food? Talk to a doctor before changing meal timing
- There isn't enough evidence to recommend fasting diets to the public (NIA). Keep it gentle
Good to know
- This is a habit guide, not a medical plan. If any of the groups above apply to you, talk to a doctor before changing when you eat.
