RUN

Run Slower, Run Better

The talk test and a run-walk plan for hating running less

The talk test

  • Can't speak in full sentences while running? Slow down
  • Being able to talk comfortably means you're in an easy, sustainable zone
  • Research backs the talk test as a simple, valid intensity guide
  • Gasping for air mid-sentence is a clear signal to ease off

Why easy should feel easy

  • Many endurance athletes do roughly 80% of training at easy intensity
  • Only about 20% is spent at hard, uncomfortable efforts
  • Easy miles build your aerobic engine without piling up fatigue
  • Speed work pays off once that easy-mile base is already there

A run-walk starter plan

  • Week 1: 5 min brisk walk, then alternate 1 min run and 1.5 min walk for 20 min
  • Midway: build toward longer run intervals, like 8 min run, 5 min walk
  • Final weeks: aim for 20-30 minutes of continuous easy running
  • Walking breaks aren't cheating, they're how most people build the habit

Good to know

  • Slow down this week and see how running actually feels. Speed can wait until easy feels easy.
