Heavy vs Light Weights
What actually builds more muscle, according to research
What the research found
- A meta-analysis pooled multiple studies comparing training loads
- Light-weight and heavy-weight training built similar amounts of muscle
- The key condition: sets were taken close to failure either way
- Heavy loads still won clearly for building pure maximal strength
How to pick your weight
- Training for muscle size: a wide range of loads works if you train hard
- Training for max strength or 1-rep maxes: lean toward heavier loads, lower reps
- Joint pain on a lift? Stop that lift and get advice before training through pain
- New lifters: start lighter, nail your form first
What 'close to failure' means
- Stop a set with about 1-3 reps left in the tank
- Not every set needs to reach complete failure
- Track how many reps you have left each set (reps in reserve)
- Effort matters more than the exact number on the plate
Good to know
- Both approaches need consistency over months. The best weight is the one you'll actually train hard with, week after week.
