FAST

Fasting: Window Myths

What a 12-month study found about eating windows and fat loss

What the study found

  • A 12-month randomized trial compared two approaches to eating
  • Group A ate within an 8-hour window, same daily calorie target as group B
  • Group B had the same calorie target with no eating window at all
  • Weight loss was not significantly different between the two groups after a year

Why fasting still 'works' for some people

  • A shorter eating window often means fewer chances to eat, so fewer total calories
  • It's a tool for eating less, not a metabolic shortcut that burns extra fat
  • The real driver is the calorie deficit, not the specific clock hours
  • Fasting can suit some people; if you're unsure about the risks, ask a clinician

Pick a window you can actually keep

  • New to fasting? Start with a window you can sustain comfortably
  • Match your window to your life: skip late-night snacks, not family breakfast
  • If your window leads to bingeing later, it's working against you
  • No single window is proven best, the best one is the one you'll repeat

Good to know

  • On glucose-lowering medication, pregnant, breastfeeding, underweight, or with a history of disordered eating? Talk to a doctor first.
